Vivarium

Isis Oasis now has a vivarium, where we keep insects, reptiles, spiders and other small creatures. The vivarium features bearded dragons (right), scorpions (left), Arizona Millipedes (below), and all of the other critters pictured on this page

 Red Leg Tarantula (left)

The Red Leg tarantula is found in the arid
scrubland habitats of Mexico. They are gentle
spiders, but when threatened they kick little
poisonous hairs off their belly with their back legs.
These hairs are very irritating to the skin and can
cause blindness if they come in contact with the eye.

  Leopard Gecko (right)

Leopard geckos are lizards native to Pakistan, India and Afghanistan where the terrain is dry and rocky.  The geckos live on and under the ground and are nocturnal. A leopard gecko has a triangular head and a large tail where it stores fat.  Its skin is bumpy and heavily patterned. The patterns are designed to camouflage the gecko from predators.

Tanzanian Tailless Whipscorpion (left)

These arachnids are from 4 to 28 mm long and resemble spiders. They are dull brown, with a flat body. Although they have four pairs of legs, they use only the three hind pairs for moving around. The very long and slender front pair of legs should not be confused with the pair of highly developed, spiny, pincer-like pedipalps. The front pair of legs is antennae-like and serves as feelers. A whipscorpion uses its pedipalps to seize its prey.

Water Dragon (right)

These lizards are semi-aquatic, using their laterally-compressed tails to propel them when swimming. They can remain submerged for long periods of time. Like many lizards, water dragons have a parietal eye, a light-sensitive "third eye" in the top of the head.
